Know the History of Roulette
Roulette is a French word that means "little wheel" and it is largely believed that in the 17th century, the game was created in France. Though there are no certainty with regards to the beginnings of roulette, there are some certain facts that will help in tracing the true history of the game.
It is believed that the well-known French mathematician in the 17th century, Blaise Pascal, is the person who created the roulette wheel. Because Pascal was interested in perpetual motion devices, many presumed that the wheel was created as an end product of the so-called devices.
In Southern France, roulette made a big success. Lots of people cannot resist the wonderful entertainment that the game brings to them.
In 1842, the two Frenchmen named Francois and Louis Blanc made a great contribution in the history of roulette. These Frenchmen invented the "zero" slot in the wheel. The goal for doing so is to increase the house edge of the game when bets are made.
During those times, gambling games were prohibited and considered illegal in France, the game of roulette was brought to Hamburg, Germany. There in Germany, Francois and Louis Blanc operated roulette games without the interference of government laws.
In the later years, Francois and Camille, his son, went back to Southern France and presented the roulette games to the Prince of Monaco, Charles III, because he has some affection for gambling. It was accepted and roulette has planted the seeds of the today's well-known Monte Carlo. The single zero roulette game was solely played at that time in Monte Carlo up to 1933.
Another important turning point in the history of roulette happened in the 1800s. This is the time that roulette reached the Americas where the game attained much success. An American variation of roulette was created because the European variation of the game has low house edge. In the American version, the two zero slot was added, thus giving a higher house and bringing billions of dollars to American casinos since then.
Since the creation of the American roulette, no major changed has happened in the game's history except that the game is now available online. In any casinos worldwide, either land-based or online, both variations of roulette, American and European, are among the main attractions of gamblers.
